In this episode, I will be discussing Sjögren’s disease and sharing information and tips for those living with the disease. Sjögren’s is an auto-immune disease that affects the entire body, and is considered an “unseen disease.” Sjögren’s is characterized by inflammation, and may result from, or be triggered by, a dysregulation of the normal immune response. It can be difficult to diagnose, as its symptoms are similar to Rheumatoid Arthritis and other conditions.
In the case of auto immune diseases such as Sjögren’s, the body attacks itself, altering the normal immune function in the body, and unfortunately has severe and debilitating side effects to the vital organs in the body. Since it is an auto-immune disease, the body “attacks itself”, this increases the pro-inflammatory response and generates dysregulation.
The two cardinal symptoms of Sjögren’s are dry mouth and dry eyes. My guest and I will cover the science behind why these symptoms accompany Sjögren’s. I will explain what cytokines are, and what happens when they proliferate and a cytokine storm is made. The higher the level of cytokines in auto-immune diseases, the more dysfunctional the immune system.
My guest and I will cover oral health care and lifestyle tips for those living with Sjögren’s. From foods to avoid, to foods to incorporate, and even some other recommendations to support your oral care routine.
Let’s jump into today’s important discussion about The Complexity of Sjögren’s, and let’s get CHATTING.
